Cars in Germany's Town Discovered Smeared with Swastikas in Human Blood, Law Enforcement Confirm

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Law Enforcement
Officers reported they were contacted by a individual who discovered a vehicle in Hanau marked with reddish substance

Around fifty cars have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.

Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then located many other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement say early analysis indicate the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

Local authorities said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have requested to the community for tips.

A senior official said the vandalism rendered him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.

"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
