Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
